WHY HYDROPONICS

Why is lettuce pricey? The weather won't cooperate

Taiwan's summers are hot, humid and typhoon-prone, so growing European-style lettuce in open fields is nearly impossible, and summer lettuce is often scarce and pricey. We moved our greens into a greenhouse and switched to hydroponics, so they can grow through the summer.

6%

Far less water

Water is recycled in the system. By our estimate, we use only about 6% of the water and nutrients that conventional open-field growing needs.

9×

Much more from the same land

With full-coverage deep-water cultivation, we estimate the same area yields about 9 times what open-field growing does.

No weeding, wind and rain kept out

The greenhouse keeps out wind, rain and insects, and there's no weeding and automatic watering. That lowers the chance of pests and disease.
